General Nomination Information

ASCD is a membership organization that develops programs, products, and services essential to the way educators learn, teach, and lead.

Before you begin to complete the Application Form, please review this page for important information about the open positions, ASCD's nominations policy, and additional information on the nominations process.


Candidate Qualifications, Time Commitment, and ASCD Support

President-Elect
Three-year Term
(one year as President-Elect, one as President, and one as Immediate Past President)

Qualifications

  • Membership in ASCD for at least the five years prior to nomination.
  • Commitment to participate in numerous meetings and activities throughout the year.
  • Demonstrated leadership accomplishments—scholarship, significant professional contributions; knowledge of current educational issues; effective communication skills; willingness to attend numerous functions and meetings throughout the year; support of ASCD's values and concepts.
  • Knowledge of purposes, goals, and plans of ASCD.
  • Experience on the Board of Directors is highly recommended.

Time Commitment
A new officer's term begins just after Annual Conference. As an ASCD officer, the President-Elect is expected to attend

  • All meetings of the Board of Directors, including ASCD's Annual Conference.
  • All meetings of the Leadership Council.
  • All conference call meetings of the Leadership Council Management Team.
  • A day-and-a-half meeting at ASCD headquarters, usually in January, with the Executive Director.
  • A two-day Annual Conference Planning Committee meeting at ASCD in the fall.
  • Meetings on invitation from affiliates and other groups, in consultation with the Executive Director.
  • Meetings for the President upon request.

ASCD Support
Support is provided consistent with established guidelines. Appropriate budget resources are provided to support officers.

Individual Expenses
Annual Conference expenses.

 

Board of Directors
Three-Year Term

Qualifications

  • Membership in ASCD for at least the four years prior to nomination.
  • Must have demonstrated leadership in education and in the Association.
  • Need demonstrated collaborative and communicative skills.
  • Commitment to policies, programs, and services of the Board and ASCD.
  • Commitment to participate by active involvement at scheduled meetings and Annual Conference.
  • Must have evidence of active involvement in the Association (e.g., committees, Annual Conference, Leadership Council).
  • Participation in affiliates desirable.

Time Commitment
A Board member's term begins just after Annual Conference. The Board meets three times per year:

  • At ASCD headquarters, usually around mid-July, for three to four days.
  • At an international location, usually in October or November, for approximately 10 days.
  • Just before ASCD's three-day Annual Conference—which Board members are also expected to attend—for one day.

Board members are also expected to attend all meetings of the Leadership Council.

ASCD Support
Support is provided consistent with established guidelines. Meeting expenses are covered except at Annual Conference.

Members-at-Large of the Leadership Council
Three-Year Term

Qualifications

  • Membership in ASCD for at least the two years prior to nomination.
  • Demonstrated leadership (e.g., technical specialist, department head/team leader, teacher mentor, administrator).
  • Commitment to participate and be actively involved in leadership meetings and activities, including the Annual Conference.

Time Commitment
A Leadership Council member-at-large term begins directly after Annual Conference. Leadership Council members are expected to attend all meetings of the Leadership Council.

Annual Conference and Leadership Council meeting expenses.

  • All time commitments are approximate and may vary because of location or circumstance.
  • Applicants for all leadership positions may want to review minutes from recent Board of Directors or Leadership Council meetings or summaries from recent Annual Meetings, which can be accessed by going to http://www.ascd.org/about_ascd/Governance/ASCD_Governance.aspx

ASCD Policy

ASCD policy for the nominations process includes the following:

 

302.4

No person is eligible to be nominated for the same elective office in two consecutive years. Elective office is defined as position title rather than by type of election.

 

302.5

No person is eligible to be nominated a second time for a post to which he or she has previously been elected and in which he or she served.

Members of the Leadership Council who are nominated for Leadership Council positions on the Board of Directors must be Leadership Council members at the time their nomination is submitted.


 

Important Reminders

  • Applicants for President-Elect and Board of Directors positions must be present for an interview with the Nominations Committee. Interviews will be scheduled on either Friday, March 5, or Saturday, March 6, 2010.

  • Applicants selected by the Nominations Committee as candidates for President-Elect are expected to participate in the Meet the President-Elect Candidates Forum on Sunday, March 7, 2010.

    All other applicants will be notified of their status within a few days of the conclusion of Annual Conference.

  • Members of the Nominations Committee are prohibited from submitting nominations.

  • All applicants will be considered according to position criteria, but no applicant is guaranteed a position on the slate.
  • Applicants must provide a copy of the Letter of Recommendation Contact Sheet to those persons who are writing letters of recommendation on their behalf. The letter writers are responsible for returning the contact sheet along with the letter of recommendation to the Nominations Chair no later than January 31, 2010. Applicants should follow up with persons writing letters of recomendations to ensure that the letters are e-mailed to the chair by this date.
  • Should you be selected as a candidate, ASCD maintains a policy of "no campaigning," which prohibits the distribution of printed literature announcing your candidacy.
  • The chair must receive all applications no later than January 31, 2010.
